What is offset lithography?
In 1980, Steffen Thomas worked with a commercial printing company to reproduce two series of limited-edition prints from original works of art. One series used black and white originals, such as drawings in pen and ink or charcoal. The other series used color originals, such as oil, acrylic or mixed media paintings. The process of offset lithography was used to make these limited numbers of reproduced prints. Photographs were taken of the original works. Then, a photochemical process was used to transfer the photographs onto aluminum plates, to be used in the printing process. Only 75-100 prints of each image were produced, thus they are referred to as limited edition prints.
What is a giclée Print?
A giclée print is a high-quality, archival printing process that uses pigment-based inks and high-resolution printers and is often used for fine art reproductions. These prints are sought after by collectors for their unmatched standard of digital reproduction and archival longevity. Several posthumous giclée prints from original Steffen Thomas paintings have been created by Steffen Thomas’s nephew, Charles Burnett, in very limited-editions.
